Post-Operative Instructions: Dental Implant Surgery

Protect Your Investment. Heal with Confidence.

Caring for Your Smile After Dental Implant Placement

You’ve taken an important step toward restoring your smile with dental implants. To ensure long-term success, it’s critical to follow the recovery guidelines below. At Star Oral Surgery, our goal is to make your healing process as smooth, safe, and comfortable as possible.

Every patient heals at their own pace, but most post-op symptoms resolve within the first week. If anything doesn’t feel right, we’re here to support you, just give us a call.

What to Expect Immediately After Surgery

It’s normal to experience some swelling, tenderness, and minor bleeding after your implant is placed. In the first 24–48 hours, focus on rest and protection of the surgical site.
  • Bleeding: Bite gently on gauze for 30–60 minutes. Slight oozing may continue for the first 24 hours. Replace gauze as needed.
  • Swelling: Apply a cold compress (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to reduce swelling during the first 48 hours.
  • Rest: Keep your head elevated and avoid physical activity. Resting promotes healing and minimizes discomfort.
  • No rinsing, spitting, or straw use for the first 24 hours—this helps prevent bleeding and protect the clot.

Pain Management

  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter medications as directed. Starting pain relief before the numbness wears off is recommended.
  • Avoid aspirin-based products unless directed, as they can increase bleeding.
  • If antibiotics are prescribed, complete the full course to prevent infection.

Diet & Hydration

A soft-food diet is essential in the first few days to protect the implant site:

Best Foods:

  • Mashed potatoes, yogurt, smoothies (no straw), applesauce, soup (cooled), scrambled eggs, oatmeal

Avoid:

  • Crunchy, spicy, hot, or chewy foods
  • Nuts, seeds, chips, or anything that could disrupt the surgical site
  • Using straws—these can dislodge the clot and delay healing

Stay hydrated, sipping water regularly without suction.

Oral Hygiene & Site Protection

Cleanliness is key to healing and preventing infection—but must be done carefully.

  • Do not brush the implant area for the first 24 hours
  • Starting day two:
    • Rinse gently with warm salt water (¼ tsp salt in 8 oz water) 2–3 times daily, especially after meals
    • Brush and floss the rest of your mouth as usual, avoiding direct contact with the surgical area for several days
  • Avoid non-prescription mouthwashes for the first week

Recovery Timeline

  • Day 1–2: Rest, apply ice packs, and manage swelling with medications
  • Day 3–5: Swelling may peak, then begin to subside. Light activity can resume
  • Day 6–7: Stitches (if non-dissolvable) may be removed or begin to dissolve
  • 2–3 months: The implant integrates with the bone (osseointegration). Follow-up visits are important for monitoring progress

Your general dentist or restorative provider will place the final crown or prosthetic after healing is complete.
