Post-Operative Instructions: All-on-4® Dental Implants
Full-Arch Restoration. Full Support During Healing.
Congratulations on the First Step Toward a New Smile
Your All-on-4® procedure is a life-changing investment in your health, function, and confidence. This full-arch implant treatment involves surgically placing four or more dental implants to support a fixed prosthetic, giving you a new, secure smile in a single day.
To help ensure a successful outcome, it’s essential to follow the recovery instructions below. At Star Oral Surgery, we’re here to guide you through every stage of healing with clear information and compassionate care.
What to Expect After All-on-4 Surgery
You’ll likely wake up with your temporary prosthetic already in place, secured to your newly placed implants. Some swelling, tightness, and soreness are completely normal.
During the first few days, your focus should be on rest, hydration, and protecting the surgical sites.
- Bleeding: Mild bleeding is common for the first 24–48 hours. Bite gently on gauze and change as needed.
- Swelling: Peaks at 48–72 hours. Use cold compresses (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) to minimize discomfort.
- Discomfort: A feeling of tightness or pressure from the prosthesis is normal and will ease over time.
- Restricted mouth opening is common and should improve with gentle jaw movement and time.
Pain Control & Medications
- Take all prescribed medications exactly as directed. Most patients receive pain medication, antibiotics, and possibly anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Begin pain meds before the numbness wears off to stay ahead of discomfort.
- If you experience nausea from medication, contact us for alternatives.
Diet After Surgery
The prosthesis placed on surgery day is temporary and not designed to chew hard or crunchy foods. Protect the implants and surrounding bone by eating only soft foods for the first several weeks.
Stick to:
- Smoothies (no straw), applesauce, yogurt, mashed potatoes, eggs, soft pasta, soup (cooled)
Avoid:
- Crunchy foods (chips, raw vegetables, toast)
- Chewy or sticky foods (gum, taffy, tough meat)
- Hot liquids during the first 48 hours
Chew slowly and carefully, and follow all food restrictions outlined by your surgical or restorative team.
Oral Hygiene & Cleaning the Prosthesis
Proper cleaning is essential for preventing infection and ensuring long-term implant success.
- Do not brush the surgical site for the first 24 hours.
- Use a prescribed mouth rinse or gentle saltwater rinse 2–3 times daily starting on day 2.
- Begin gentle brushing of the prosthesis and non-surgical areas after the first few days using a soft-bristled brush.
- Avoid using water flossers or electric toothbrushes near the implants until cleared by your doctor.
Your prosthetic cleaning routine may evolve as healing progresses; follow our updates at each post-op visit.
Activity & Healing Timeline
- Days 1–3: Rest, ice, and follow a liquid/soft diet
- Week 1: Sutures may begin to dissolve; swelling improves
- Weeks 2–6: Soft tissue healing continues; stick to soft foods
- Months 3–6: Implants fully integrate (osseointegration)
- Final prosthesis placement: Once healing is confirmed, your restorative dentist will place your permanent arch
We’ll schedule post-op visits to monitor healing and coordinate with your restorative provider.
